Coronation Street legend reacts to Gail Platt’s departure

Coronation Street‘s Nigel Havers has spoken about Helen Worth’s upcoming departure.

Havers played Lewis Archer in multiple stints from 2009 to 2019, and in his time, the character has both had relationships with and stolen money from Worth’s character Gail Rodwell and Gail’s mum Audrey Roberts.

“I still owe her £48,000,” Havers joked during an appearance on tonight’s (November 27) The One Show.

“People still come back to me and say, ‘Did you ever pay her back?’ And I say, ‘I’m just me!'”

Speaking more generally about the imminent exit of his co-star, the actor said that: She will be missed because she’s really part of the show. And she was great fun to work with.”

Worth’s 50 years on the soap will come to an end on Christmas Day, as Gail is set to marry her old flame Jesse Chadwick, but will she go through with it?

Corrie‘s new producer Kate Brooks recently told Digital Spy and other press outlets that Gail will feel betrayed by a lot of people leading into her final episode, and while things are going to be dramatic and explosive, it’ll also be a warm treat to cap off viewers’ December 25.

“Gail has been such an icon on the Street for such a long time – 50 years of television, which is amazing. We can’t tell a story on Christmas Day about her exit without it being steeped in nostalgia,” she teased.

“There’s tons of nostalgia in this episode, and hopefully people will be crying, they’ll be laughing, there’ll be gasps as people watching it go: ‘Oh my goodness, that’s just happened!’

“It’s old-school Corrie but just with a modern twist, and I think people will really, really enjoy it. I want people to sit down on Christmas night with a full tummy, watch this episode and go: ‘You know what, that is exactly what I needed’. So that’s what Corrie is this Christmas.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
