Waterloo Road spoilers follow.
Steve Savage’s (Jason Manford) arrival to Waterloo Road has unearthed long-buried secrets for Nicky Walters (Kym Marsh). As her first boyfriend, Steve’s return to Nicky’s life has put a strain on her relationship with Donte Charles (Adam Thomas) because Nicky has avoided revealing their connection.
In tonight’s (September 24) episode, Nicky’s feud with her sister Debs Rafferty (Hollie-Jay Bowes) over their mum’s inheritance came to a head, and out of spite, Debs revealed Nicky’s past with Steve to Donte.
“They weren’t just schoolmates – he was her boyfriend, her first proper boyfriend,” Debs said smugly, just as Nicky approached them and Donte walked off.

“Where is your loyalty?” Nicky angrily questioned her sister.
Debs’ response caused Nicky to unleash a tirade of home truths over how she had looked after her as a child amid their mother’s alcohol abuse.
Later, Nicky went to see Steve, and they had a heart-to-heart as she comforted him over his son Billy being bullied, and he supported her over Debs’ nasty comments.
She tearfully exclaimed: “Obviously I wasn’t enough”, to which he replied: “How could you not be enough?”.
The charged moment led them to hold hands and lean in as if to share a kiss, but Nicky broke away before it could go any further. As she left, Donte saw them and ran off, with Nicky speeding after him to explain.

“I shouldn’t have lied to you. I was just scared of losing you. You are the best thing that’s ever walked into my life, and I know it sounds stupid, but I was scared that if I told you about me and Steve then everything would just get really awkward. I didn’t want anything to change.”
“I think the world of you, Nick,” Donte said, revealing that her daughter Tonya had even told him that she would be happy if they got married one day.
“If you ask me, I’ll say yes,” Nicky declared, before getting down on her knees and saying: “In fact, if you’re not going to ask me… will you marry me?”
Donte grinned, and the couple hugged, but will their happiness last?
