Waterloo Road aired a worrying health scare for Tonya Walters, with the student going to the doctor.

Tonya has been suffering with heavy periods throughout the 14th series of the BBC soap, with Tuesday’s (October 1) episode – the fourth in the series – picking up as she continued to be in pain.

Wanting some advice, she met with mother and canteen worker Nicky to help with her struggles, with the pair eventually seeing the school doctor.

The adults don’t take her concerns seriously initially, with the doctor offering her a contraceptive pill after putting her condition down to stress. This later leads to a fraught conversation between mother and daughter, with Tonya feeling as if her concerns are being dismissed.

Her emotions get the better of her later on as she storms out of class after not being allowed to go to the toilet, with Dwayne later leaving to console her. Tonya then found her mother to ask if she could return home, but Nicky still wasn’t trusting of her daughter.

This led to disastrous consequences after Tonya collapsed in the corridor, with Dwayne rushing to the canteen to inform Nicky. Heeding the worries this time, Nicky – in tow with Headmaster Savage – headed to the hospital, aiming to get to the bottom of the matter.

As Tonya was awaiting her test results, she confided in her mother that she felt ignored in the whole matter. The doctor arrived to say the blood results had come back clear, though Nicky – who had listened carefully to her daughter’s words – wasn’t quite so certain to leave immediately.

Tonya, who had searched for her symptoms online, suggested that she may be suffering with endometriosis, though the doctor remarked that it was unlikely given her age. After returning home, Tonya and Nicky shared a tearful conversation, with the latter believing Tonya’s earlier suspicions.

She assured her daughter that she would get the best treatment for Tonya, bringing them closer than before – but will Tonya get a diagnosis?

Waterloo Road airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
